Overview

Electromagnetic forces underlie all of chemistry. The fields produced by atoms and their surroundings are responsible for the dynamics of chemical reactions. Modern advances in laser technology now permits the creation of pulses that have field strengths comparable to those of chemical bonds. As well, the timescale on which the laser can be manipulated are comparable with the dynamics of chemical reactions themselves. As a result, it is now possible to directly control atoms and molecules with external lasers fields.
